Spain’s digital nomad visa has been running long enough for patterns to emerge in what gets approved and what gets refused. The rules have not changed dramatically in 2026, but the way they are applied has become stricter in three places: the income test, the proof that your work is really remote, and the paperwork from your employer or clients.

Who qualifies

You need to work remotely for companies outside Spain, either as an employee or as a freelancer with a client base that is mostly abroad. Income from Spanish clients is allowed, but only up to a fifth of the total. The minimum income is set as a multiple of the Spanish minimum wage, so it moves each year; for 2026 you should plan on roughly two and a half thousand euros a month, more if family members come with you.

Where applications fail

  • Employment contracts that do not state explicitly that the work can be done remotely.

  • Freelancers who cannot show at least three months of history with the clients named in the application.

  • Degrees or three years of experience that are claimed but not properly certified and translated.

  • Health insurance that has co-payments or waiting periods, which the offices treat as insufficient.

What to do now

Decide first whether to apply from your home country, through the consulate, or from inside Spain as a tourist, which is faster and gives a three-year permit directly. Then gather the documents in the list above, check the dates on each one, and have the file reviewed before anything is submitted. A first review is free, and far cheaper than fixing a refusal.
